MEDIA ALERT: SCOPA TO CONDUCT OVERSIGHT VISIT TO CAPE TOWN CENTRAL LINE TRAIN STATIONS

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) will tomorrow conduct oversight visits to various train stations on the Cape Town Central Line.

Tomorrow’s visit forms part of the committee’s follow-up to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) after the observations it made after the visit it undertook on 20 April 2023. The committee observed security challenges due to the repeated incidents of theft, illegal settlement on the railway line and vandalism.

SCOPA also noted the incompleteness of the infrastructure on the Cape Town Central Line service between Nyanga and Chris Hani in Khayelitsha, which PRASA had informed the committee would be fully operational by the end of December 2022.

The committee is also scheduled to meet with PRASA on the progress made regarding the implementation plans by the City of Cape Town, Department of Human Settlements, National Development Agency (NDA), and Department of Public Works and Infrastructure on the relocation of illegal dwellers on the railway reserve between Philippi and Langa.

The meeting will be attended by the Department of Transport, the National and the Western Cape Provincial Department of Human Settlements, the NDA and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
