Medalists’ Night: The Merits of 246 Athletes Recognized by the Ministry of Sports

Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Sports, Youth and Employment recognized on Friday in Ouagadougou the merits of 246 athletes who defended Burkina Faso’s colors internationally, during an evening called “Night of the Medalists,” noted the AIB.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the year 2024 was exceptional, with 246 athletes participating in 127 international competitions, winning 323 medals, including 110 gold, 98 silver, and 115 bronze. These results illustrate the hard work of the athletes, supported by 78 technical coaches, and reflect Burkina Faso’s excellence in various disciplines.



This prestigious Medalists’ Night, marked by a festive atmosphere, brought together sports and political figures, as well as partners, to honor the national champions. In the speech delivered by the ceremony’s patron, the President of Burkina Faso, read by the Minister of Sports, Roland Somda, he praised the athletes’ efforts, who embody the resilience and commitment of the Burkinabe people.



He stressed that Burkinabe sport, despite security and economic challenges, has distinguished itself through remarkable performances on the international scene. “Every medal, every record, every victory is the result of countless hours of training, sacrifice, and an unwavering desire to succeed. Your journey inspires Burkinabe youth and strengthens our country’s position among nations,” said Minister Somda.



The Director General of Sports and Leisure, Val©rie Wendgu©t© Badolo/Tapsoba, paid a warm tribute to these athletes, whom she described as “Determined Volunteers for the Fatherland (VDP) of sport.” She affirmed that the year 2024 will remain etched in the annals of Burkinabe sport as an exceptional season, despite the challenges of the current context. “Our valiant sporting ambassadors, driven by the resilience and determination that characterize the Burkinabe people, have raised the national flag higher on the international stage,” she said.



Beyond the medals, the evening served as an opportunity to recognize the essential role of the defense and security forces, who provide a favorable environment for such feats. National sport sponsors and partners were also recognized for their invaluable support. As the 2024-2025 season begins, Burkinabe champions, motivated by this celebration, are aiming for new records to raise the national flag even higher on the international stage.
