Windhoek: President Nangolo Mbumba has extended a congratulatory message to Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was announced as Namibia’s president-elect by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Tuesday. Mbumba described the victory as a historic win.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Namibia’s Presidential and National Assembly Elections were held from 27 to 30 November 2024. Ndaitwah garnered 57.3 percent of the votes cast, making her Namibia’s first female president. Panduleni Itula, leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), came second with 25.5 percent of the votes cast in the presidential election.
In the National Assembly elections, the Swapo Party won 51 seats, followed by IPC with 20 seats out of the 96 seats in the National Assembly. Mbumba stated, “The Namibian people have spoken. Namibians in their majority wrote a new chapter in the history of their constitutional democracy by electing the first female president of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. n behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, I congratulate Her Excellency, Dr Nandi-Ndaitwah on her brilliant and historic victory.”
Mbumba also expressed confidence in Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership, anticipating a brighter future for the Namibian people. “In the days and months ahead, we should all provide the President-Elect with the necessary support to enable her to successfully assume the important duties of Head of State of the Republic of Namibia on 21 March 2025,” he added.
Additionally, Mbumba congratulated all the candidates heading to the eighth National Assembly, encouraging them to be exemplary and to prepare thoroughly for the legislative tasks ahead. “For some of the candidates and political parties, it might not be the electoral outcome they had hoped for. However, in a democracy and the processes of competitive elections, there will always be winners and losers. More important, there is always a next time,” Mbumba remarked.
