Mauritanian President Takes Helm as African Union Chairperson for 2024

ADDIS ABABA – The African Union (AU) has selected Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of Mauritania, as its Chairperson for the year 2024. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the 37th AU Summit held in Ethiopia’s capital.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, President Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros passed the chairmanship to Ghazouani at today’s summit. Ghazouani, in his acceptance speech, vowed to fulfill his duties with dedication towards African unity and progress. The position of AU Chairperson, a ceremonial role elected annually by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, rotates among the continent’s five regions, aiming to ensure equitable representation across Africa.
