Market Gardening in Kompienga: A Tool for Resilience Amid Challenges

Kompienga: Vegetable producers in Kompienga province are demonstrating resilience despite a difficult context, thanks to the cultivation of cash crops such as onions, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, bananas, and papayas. However, they expressed a desire to see agricultural inputs made available to them in order to boost their production and sustainably meet their needs. According to Burkina Information Agency, households in Kompienga province, home to one of Burkina Faso's largest hydroelectric dams, manage to obtain vegetables and fruits to improve their diets. This is thanks to market gardeners who cultivate these crops despite a challenging environment. Boureima Ouédraogo, spokesperson for the market gardeners, highlighted the difficulties, including a lack of inputs that reduces production capacity. They also requested the opening of the approximately 30-kilometer Kompienga-Pognoa Togo road to facilitate their travel.
