Luanda: The remains of Manuel Augusto, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, were interred on Thursday at the Alto das Cruzes Cemetery in Luanda. The burial followed a day of tributes, where many expressed sorrow and recognized his contributions to the Angolan State.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the funeral was attended by a gathering of family, friends, colleagues, members of the Executive, and representatives of the diplomatic corps. They accompanied the funeral procession and paid their final respects to the deputy of the National Assembly and the secretary of the MPLA Political Bureau for Foreign Affairs.
At the cemetery, a poignant moment unfolded as the grandchildren of Manuel Augusto delivered the only tribute there. They shared memories of him as a simple and loving man, whose life was centered around family and work.
The grandchildren highlighted how Manuel Augusto was a constant presence during pivotal moments in their lives, noting his teachings, unconditional support, and sacrifices made for the family's well-being.
Angolan ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Jos© Filipe, commented on the loss, stating that the country has lost one of its most experienced diplomats. He acknowledged Manuel Augusto's intelligence and strategic vision, which he dedicated to the nation.
The diplomat emphasized that his passing represents a significant loss for Angolan diplomacy due to his extensive contributions in various governmental and diplomatic roles over the years.
Earlier, a tribute ceremony was held at the Army General Staff Headquarters, attended by President Joo Louren§o and high-ranking state officials. Messages of condolence and tributes from various institutions remembered Manuel Augusto as a model servant, whose work helped elevate Angola on both the African and international stages.
MPLA vice-president Mara Quiosa praised Manuel Augusto's legacy and his profound sense of state service. She remarked on Angola's deep sadness at the loss of a dedicated son, whose life exemplified commitment to the nation and its people.
In her message, Mara Quiosa noted that Manuel Augusto served with discipline, rigor, and responsibility over decades of public service, leaving behind a legacy of patriotism and dedication to national interests.
She also highlighted the party's central leadership's respect for his memory, recognizing his role in consolidating the Angolan State and enhancing the country's international stature.
Manuel Domingos Augusto passed away last Friday due to illness, leaving behind a career distinguished by diplomacy, media involvement, government service, and steadfast commitment to national interests.
Born on September 2, 1957, Manuel Domingos Augusto had a long and illustrious career. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2020 and was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs from 2010 to 2012. He was educated in Public International Law and trained in Diplomacy, Diplomatic and Consular Law and Practice, holding diplomatic posts in countries such as Ethiopia, Zambia, South Africa, and Nigeria.
Additionally, he worked in the media and press sector, with stints at Jornal de Angola and Angola's Public Television station (TPA). He also held government roles, including deputy minister of Social Communication. At the time of his passing, he was serving as secretary of the MPLA Political Bureau for Foreign Affairs, marking the end of a career defined by diplomacy and public service.
