Istanbul: Manchester United was held to a 1-1 draw by Fenerbahçe in the Europa League on Thursday, marking their third consecutive tie in the competition. The match, played at Fenerbahçe’s home ground, saw a dramatic turn of events when the Turkish club’s coach, José Mourinho, was sent off by the referee.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Manchester United initially took the lead with a goal from Christian Eriksen in the 15th minute, who managed to send the ball soaring into the top corner past Fenerbahçe’s goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic. However, the advantage was short-lived as Moroccan international Youssef En-Nesyri scored shortly after halftime, equalizing the game in the 49th minute.
The game took a contentious turn when Fenerbahçe claimed a penalty in the Manchester United area, a situation that led to the ejection of José Mourinho. The French referee, Clément Turpin, dismissed Mourinho in the 58th minute, citing inappropriate behavior on the sidelines. Following the match, Mourinho, who previo
usly managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018, humorously acknowledged Turpin’s officiating skills, stating, “I congratulate him, his peripheral vision is incredible. During a game at 100 miles an hour, he had one eye on the action in the box and another on my behavior on the bench.”
After his dismissal, Mourinho watched the remainder of the match from the stands, as his team and Manchester United played out the final minutes without further incident. The draw leaves Manchester United still searching for a victory in the Europa League group stage.
