Koulikoro, Mali - Malian trainees from the National Staff School of Koulikoro (EEMNK) have completed a week-long study trip to Burkina Faso aimed at learning from the Burkinabe military's experiences in counterterrorism. The officers, part of the 36th promotion of the Koulikoro Higher Military Education School, participated in a series of engagements designed to deepen their understanding of regional military strategies against terrorism.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the study trip focused on sharing knowledge and practices in the fight against terrorism. The Malian officers were immersed in a military environment where they observed the operations and collaboration techniques of the Burkinabe forces. This educational visit also included tours of several tourist attractions in Burkina Faso, celebrating the cultural heritage of the region known as the Land of Thomas Sankara.
The trip is part of the academic program of the EEMNK, which aims to develop officers skilled in staff integration, crisis management, and proactive decision-making. Colonel Youssouf Oumar Cissé, commander of the EEMNK, outlined the school’s mission to train officers equipped with advanced writing and office skills, capable of leading in complex cooperative scenarios.
This initiative comes against the backdrop of heightened military cooperation among Sahel countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These nations have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a unique partnership focusing on combating terrorism and other destabilizing forces in Africa. The AES was formalized with the establishment of a permanent joint force during a summit on March 6, 2024, in Niamey, which was further reinforced at the latest summit on July 6, 2027, in Niger.
The collaboration among these states represents a significant step towards regional security, particularly in an area that spans over 2.7 million square kilometers and is rich in strategic resources. The heads of state of the AES countries have expressed a shared commitment to eradicating terrorism and crime within their territories, emphasizing a unified approach to security challenges in the Sahel.
