Mali: Defense Minister Posthumously Promoted to the Rank of Army General by President Assimi Gota

Mali: Mali paid a final solemn tribute this Thursday to its Minister of State, Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, General Sadio Camara, who died on April 25, 2026. On this occasion, the President of the Transition, Assimi Gota, posthumously promoted the deceased to the rank of Army General, praising his "exceptional commitment to the service of the Nation."

According to Burkina Information Agency, the funeral ceremony, organized with military honors, brought together the highest authorities of the country, foreign delegations as well as many citizens who came to express their gratitude to the man who was a central figure in the rebuilding of the Malian security apparatus.

In his eulogy, the Prime Minister, Major General Abdoulaye Maga, retraced the deceased's career, highlighting a career marked by rigor, loyalty and a sense of duty. From his training at the Koulikoro Inter-Arms Military School to his responsibilities at the highest level of the State, Sadio Camara has established himself as a key player in the rise to power of the Malian Armed Forces.

Visibly moved, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Brigadier General Alou Bo Diarra, a classmate of the deceased (the 24th class of the Koulikoro Combined Arms Military School), gave a poignant testimony on the life and personality of his comrade-in-arms. He described a humble, discreet but deeply committed man, embodying "dignity in hardship and quiet strength in the face of adversity."

Recalling their years of joint training, he praised a visionary officer whose ambition went beyond the military framework to embrace the overall development of the country. The testimonies also highlighted the human qualities of the deceased, including his generosity, his religious faith and his commitment to the values of solidarity.

For his family and colleagues alike, Sadio Camara will remain a model of dedication and integrity. The ceremony concluded with a military parade in memory of the illustrious deceased, during which the armed forces paid a final tribute to one of their own.
