Abuja: On a working and solidarity visit to Mali, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the President of the Malian Transition, General Assimi GOTA, have reaffirmed their commitment to bolster cooperation to address security and economic challenges. During the visit, President Faye engaged in discussions with General Assimi GOTA, followed by both restricted and expanded working sessions involving delegations from both nations.

According to Burkina Information Agency, President Faye expressed gratitude for the "warm and fraternal welcome" he received, emphasizing the historical and cultural ties that bind Senegal and Mali. He highlighted that his visit was an act of solidarity with the Malian people. President Faye offered condolences for recent terrorist attacks in Mali and condemned these acts, acknowledging Mali's sacrifices for peace and security.

A significant portion of the dialogue between the two leaders centered on peace and security issues in the Sahel. They recognized the necessity for enhanced cooperation and unified action among regional states in the face of cross-border terrorist threats. President Faye reiterated Senegal's commitment to support Mali in addressing security challenges and promoting regional stability.

The discussions also explored strengthening bilateral cooperation and revitalizing regional mechanisms, particularly within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS). Both leaders agreed to continue consultations with regional counterparts to organize a summit aimed at reinforcing monetary and economic cooperation, as well as the joint management of water resources.

This visit underscores the mutual intent of Mali and Senegal to prioritize dialogue and collaborative efforts to tackle shared challenges, contributing to the stability, integration, and sustainable development of the sub-region.
