Malawi Reaffirms Support for the Lobito Corridor

Luanda: Malawi's outgoing ambassador to Angola, Margaret Kamoto, reinforced her country's support for the Lobito Corridor project, located in Benguela province, considering it a strategic infrastructure for Angola and the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The diplomat made these remarks while addressing the press after an audience with the President of Angola, Joo Louren§o, during which she bid farewell at the conclusion of her diplomatic mission to Angola with non-resident status.

According to Angola Press News Agency, Kamoto expressed Malawi's desire to integrate projects associated with the Lobito Corridor and reiterated her country's support for all initiatives connected to this important infrastructure. She explained that the purpose of her audience with the Angolan Head of State was to formalize her farewell and convey greetings from Malawi's President, Lazarus Chakwera.

The ambassador conveyed a message of cordiality and recognition for the relations maintained between Angola and Malawi during her mandate, which she exercised from South Africa. She noted that relations between the two countries have been strengthening, highlighted by the signing of a framework cooperation agreement.

Kamoto assessed the outcome of the Angolan presidency of the African Union (AU) positively, noting its impact as significant for the SADC countries. She emphasized that Malawi actively followed and supported the Angolan mandate, acknowledging its importance for the region.

When questioned about the impact of the Angolan presidency of the AU on the implementation of Agenda 2063, Kamoto stated that Angola achieved its objectives during its mandate. She reiterated Malawi's full support for ongoing initiatives and expressed expectations for the continuity of the agenda outlined by Angola.
