Makueni County Launches Free Eye Treatment and Surgery Initiative for Over 300 Patients

Makueni, Kenya – In a significant move to address eye health issues, Makueni County Referral Hospital (MCRH) has launched a free eye treatment and surgery camp. This initiative, a collaboration between Makueni County Government and the Rotary Clubs of Nairobi and Machakos, is set to benefit over 300 patients suffering from eye cataracts.

According to Kenya News Agency, the free eye camp, scheduled from January 29 to 31, 2024, at MCRH, is open to residents of Makueni and neighboring counties including Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado. Dr. Musila, during the official launch at MCRH, urged local residents to take advantage of this opportunity to alleviate their eye conditions. He highlighted the participation of two doctors each from Homa Bay and Siaya counties, alongside four from MCRH, noting that 30 surgeries had already been performed.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, who presided over the event, pledged to extend eye treatment services to all local sub-counties. He emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping local health facilities with necessary eye check-up machines and trained health workers. This effort aims to tackle chronic eye diseases at the grassroots level effectively.

Susan Rambana, President of the Rotary Club, expressed their mission to create hope in society by providing essential services. She assured the continuation of free cataract surgeries and treatment for people with eye problems.

Among the beneficiaries is Mary Nzomo, who has lived with an eye condition for the past five years due to the high cost of treatment. Nzomo expressed her gratitude towards the county government and the Rotary Clubs for initiating the free eye camp, highlighting its potential to benefit many in the county.
