Makeni Hosts Opening of Fifth National Rehabilitation Centre for Drug and Substance Abuse Victims

Makeni: Prof. Foday Sahr, Chairman of the National Taskforce on Drug and Substance Abuse, today officially commissioned the Makeni Rehabilitation Centre for victims of drug and substance abuse at the Teko Military Barracks in Makeni City.

According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Prof. Sahr emphasized the Government of Sierra Leone's commitment to tackling the challenge of substance abuse, particularly among the nation's youth. The Makeni Teko facility is the fifth rehabilitation centre established nationwide. It is fully funded and managed by the Government, showcasing a sustained national response to the crisis.

A representative of the beneficiaries praised the initiative and called for ongoing medical support throughout the rehabilitation process. The representative also stressed the importance of structured reintegration programmes following the mandatory two-month stay, highlighting their role in preventing relapse. The representative noted the critical need for engagement, quoting, 'An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'

Delivering the vote of thanks, Mrs. Margaret Dumbuya, a parent of one of the beneficiaries, expressed deep gratitude to the Government for the establishment of the centre. She remarked on the continuing devastation caused by substance abuse to families across the country, with many parents, particularly mothers, carrying the emotional burden daily.

Other key stakeholders, including the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Alfred Jamiru, and Ansumana Konneh from the Ministry of Social Welfare, reassured beneficiaries of the Government's commitment to providing quality care and service delivery at the facility.

Representatives from the Bombali District Council and private sector partners pledged their support to the initiative. They indicated plans to explore employment opportunities for beneficiaries upon successful completion of their rehabilitation programme.

The establishment of this centre underscores the importance of a whole-of-community approach in addressing drug and substance abuse, ensuring sustainable recovery and reintegration for affected individuals.
