NAIROBI: The National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Gladys Shollei, has called on athletes to make informed financial decisions to ensure they lead comfortable lives after retirement. Shollei emphasized the importance of early financial planning in athletes’ careers to avert the financial challenges often faced by retired sports professionals.
According to Kenya News Agency, Shollei highlighted the necessity for athletes to invest their earnings wisely. She recounted advising an individual to invest in real estate over farming, citing the better returns from property investments. Shollei urged athletes to prepare for life beyond their sports careers, stressing the need for strategic financial management.
Shollei, who also serves as Uasin Gishu Women Representative, made these remarks at the Sports Technology Conference Africa 2024 held at Strathmore University Business School in Nairobi. The event, themed “Impact of Technology and Science in Sports Development and Performance,” focused on strategies to help athl
etes utilize advanced technology to enhance performance and manage their careers, finances, and retirement plans effectively.
The Deputy Speaker advocated for stronger collaboration between private and public sectors to equip athletes with essential skills beyond sports, such as public speaking and media handling, to better navigate challenges both in and outside the sports arena. She also identified a significant healthcare gap in the sporting sector, noting the limited availability of sports medicine specialists in the country.
Dr. Edna Thangu from Kenyatta University, who also spoke at the event, highlighted the importance of inclusivity and support for athletes with disabilities, ensuring they receive equal opportunities alongside able-bodied athletes.
Renowned javelin athlete Julius Yego echoed the sentiments of unity within Kenya’s sports community to secure a brighter future for athletes. The Sports Tech Africa event facilitated discussions and shared visions for a future where athletes achieve succ
ess both on and off the field.
The conference also addressed broader issues such as the development of critical areas, including the training of physiotherapists and continuous learning enhancements for athletes and healthcare professionals through technology.
