Machakos Matatu Operators Attend Road Safety Clinic to Enhance Traffic Compliance

MACHAKOS – The Matatu Owners Association, in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority and traffic police, organized a road safety clinic at the Machakos bus stage to educate matatu owners and operators on proper road usage.

According to Kenya News Agency, president of the Matatu Owners Association, the initiative aims to decrease road accidents through ongoing educational clinics across all counties. Karakacha emphasized the association’s strategy during the event, noting that the program had received endorsement from national leadership to significantly reduce accidents within the next 90 days. He highlighted the dual benefits of these clinics in both enhancing road safety and curbing the frequent police crackdowns on matatus which often lead to corrupt practices.

Karakacha also advocated for the formation of a monthly committee by county officials and stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of these clinics. He issued a stern warning against common dangerous practices such as drunk driving and overloading vehicles. Karakacha suggested the use of courier services for transporting luggage to prevent these issues and to foster job creation within the county.

Additionally, Rita Ndunge, the Machakos Chief Executive Member for Roads and Transport, reinforced the importance of traffic rule adherence. She urged matatu drivers to install safety belts in their vehicles and called on boda boda riders to wear helmets and adhere to speed limits to improve overall road safety for themselves and their passengers.
