Migori: The M-Pesa Foundation has embarked on a significant educational initiative by launching the construction and equipping of Wasio Comprehensive School in Migori County, with an investment of Sh72 million. This effort is targeted at enhancing access to quality and digital learning in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the recent groundbreaking ceremony at Wasio Primary School in Suna East Sub-County marks the second such project in Migori County, following the initial development at Komolo Rume in Awendo Sub-County. Principal Secretary for Investment and Asset Management, Cyril Odede, highlighted the initiative as a crucial investment that aims to improve educational standards in the area.
Odede, who has personal ties to the institution as an alumnus, expressed his appreciation for the M-Pesa Foundation's response to the community's call for better educational infrastructure. He believes this project will transform Wasio Comprehensive School into a model institution in Migori and help retain students who previously transferred to neighboring schools due to inadequate facilities.
The PS emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing development challenges, citing limited public funds as a significant constraint. He urged collaboration with private entities to meet increasing development needs.
Joseph Ogutu, Chairperson of the M-Pesa Foundation, stated that the project is part of the 'Citizens of the Future' programme, aimed at modernizing educational institutions nationwide. The initiative will see the construction of new classrooms for various education levels and a state-of-the-art ICT laboratory equipped with modern technology.
Ogutu revealed the foundation's ambitious plan to support the development of 500 schools across Kenya by 2030, intending to enhance educational facilities and ensure students' readiness for a digital future. The project will also include the provision of modern furniture, safety equipment, and resources to support the school feeding programme.
The construction of Wasio Comprehensive School is slated to be completed in nine months, with the handover expected in March 2027.
