In a thrilling finale at Mundika Boys Primary School grounds in Busia County, Lung’a Football Club retained the Joshua Wabwire Cup, overcoming Mabale Football Club in a tense penalty shootout.
According to Kenya News Agency, Lung’a FC, the defending champions, faced a challenging start when Mabale’s Emmanuel Omondi scored in the 18th minute. However, Lung’a leveled the score in the 38th minute with a goal from Habib Haji. Despite numerous opportunities for both teams, the match concluded in a 1-1 draw, leading to a penalty shootout where Lung’a emerged as champions. This annual tournament is sponsored by Nairobi-based lawyer, Joshua Wabwire.
The semi-finals saw Mabale FC securing their place in the final by defeating Munongo FC 1-0 at Mundika Boys Primary School, thanks to a goal by Emmanuel Omondi. Lung’a FC earned their spot in the final by overcoming Lwanya Junction 1-0 at Lwanya Boys’ Primary School, with Erick Peter scoring the decisive goal.
Lwanya Junction clinched third place with a convincing 3-0 victory over Munongo at Lwanya Primary School. Gift Khaseke opened the scoring, followed by a brace from Chrisantus Ongoro.
In terms of rewards, Lung’a FC received a trophy and a cash prize of Sh 50,000. Mabale FC, as first runners-up, were awarded a trophy and Sh 30,000, while second runners-up Lwanya Junction received Sh 20,000. Fourth-placed Munongo FC were awarded Sh 10,000. Additionally, all top four teams received a set of uniforms, and each of the 25 participating teams from Matayos Constituency was gifted new soccer balls.
The final match was attended by Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, who encouraged young athletes to pursue their talents with hard work, discipline, and focus. Joshua Wabwire, the tournament’s sponsor, emphasized the event’s role in nurturing youth talent, fostering unity, and providing entertainment. He highlighted the tournament’s aim to engage youths meaningfully and offer opportunities through talent.
This year marked the third edition of the Joshua Wabwire Super Cup, first held in December 2021. Wabwire, an alumnus of the University of Oxford Faculty of Law, announced plans to link four of the best players to national soccer academies for further training and mentorship.
