Luanda to Host International Women’s Forum for Peace and Democracy

Luanda: The Angolan capital, Luanda, will host the second International Women's Forum for Peace and Democracy on July 9 and 10, an initiative of the President of the Republic, Joo Lourenço. The information was disclosed Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Luanda Biennial Commission, Nuno Caldas, during the official launch of the conference. According to Angola Press News Agency, the International Forum aims, among other objectives, to assist the Angolan State and international partners in strengthening the role of women in promoting and consolidating peace, a culture of non-violence, security, democracy, good governance, and sustainable development in Africa. Nuno Caldas said the event arises with the intention of identifying solutions to the challenges related to women's participation in development processes and strengthening the cooperation network between governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society. The official stated that the Forum is taking place at a special mom ent, marked by the celebration of the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000 on Women, Peace, and Security, an instrument that recognizes the central role of women in conflict prevention and resolution, mediation, peacebuilding, and decision-making processes. Caldas added that the initiative aligns with the objectives of the African Union's Agenda 2063, the UN Agenda for Women, Peace and Security, and African and international instruments promoting gender equality and women's rights. He highlighted that Angola and the African Union reaffirm their commitment to promoting peace, democracy, gender equality, and inclusive development, recognizing the fundamental role of women in building more just, stable, and prosperous societies. The event to run under the motto 'Transforming Africa by empowering women in leadership for peace and inclusive development on the continent,' constitutes a platform for strategic reflection, sharing of experiences, and mobilization of concrete actions in fav or of women's empowerment and the consolidation of peace on the African continent, according to the source. The first activity of this kind took place in May 2023, within the framework of the Luanda Biennial - Pan-African Forum for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence.
