Luanda: The Luanda Provincial Swimming team clinched a total of 18 medals at the South African Open Swimming Championships, an event open to men's and women's teams from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, which concluded on Sunday in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the Angolan swimmers excelled in the Level III competition, which took place in a 50-meter pool, securing 10 gold, six silver, and two bronze medals. Their impressive performance placed the Luanda team 8th overall out of 50 participating teams, amassing a total of 497.50 points.
The Curro Aquatic Swim Club claimed the top spot with 1,360 points, followed by Swimlab Aquatic Academy in second place with 1,002 points, and Tygerberg Aquatics in third with 898 points.
Representing the Angolan capital were swimmers Silv©rio Manuel, Leonardo Comotti, Davi Dode, Carlos Guimares, Guilherme Sousa, and Olseksander Zhukov. Completing the team were Neizla Santos, Maria Parimbeli, Rhanya Santo, Aleksandra Zhukov, Sevannah Kempson, Alice Body, Carolina Guimares, Chelsea Vunge, Isis Palha, and Wendy Morais.
This marks the third time the state federation has participated in international competitions, with previous appearances in Namibia and South Africa, both scheduled for 2024. The championship featured participants from Angola, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, and host South Africa.
