Luanda: The 4th Edition of the Luanda Biennial will be held in the Angolan capital this year at two main times, from the 2nd to the 4th of July and from the 12th to the 13th of November, Angola’s representative to the African Union (AU), Miguel Bembe, announced in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the event, also known as the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence, will initially feature activities such as “Intergenerational Dialogue at ministerial level,” “Thematic Forums,” and “Parallel Events.” The subsequent phase will focus on the High-Level opening ceremony with Heads of State and Government, including presentations of the results of the July 2025 Thematic Forums and the unveiling of a travelling exhibition.
Miguel Bembe highlighted that the 4th edition aims to showcase the contributions of Africans and people of African descent to humanity’s progress, enhance African cultural identity, and promote the educational use of the General History of Africa.
The African Union, alongside the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Angolan government, shares responsibilities for organizing the event. The AU coordinates partner consultations, financial resource mobilization, and the selection of young participants for the Intergenerational Dialogue. UNESCO contributes by mobilizing international partners, participating in communication strategy formation, and consulting with the Scientific Committee and Angolan government.
In collaboration with its partners, Angola ensures logistical support, sends invitations to high-level figures, organizes participant arrivals, and facilitates the dissemination of the forum’s activities. A recent consultation meeting in Paris approved the motto and organizational principles for the 4th Edition.
The meeting also addressed the financial sustainability of future editions and discussed the financial forecast for creating a Youth for Peace Prize. Member States and partners are encouraged to participate actively in promoting a culture of peace and non-violence in Africa.
Established by the 24th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the AU in January 2015, the Luanda Biennial is a joint initiative by Angola, UNESCO, and the AU. The 2025 edition carries the motto ‘Honor the Past, Value the Achievements, Build the Africa We Want,’ aligning with the AU theme ‘Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations.’
