Luanda: Joo Costa, the president of the Confederation of Africa Canoeing (CAC), announced Thursday that Luanda Bay, which currently hosts the continental championship, meets the requirements to host the 2027 World Championship.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Costa made the announcement during the official opening of the competition, revealing that he had shared this suggestion with high-ranking International Canoe Federation officials. He mentioned that if the proposal receives government approval, the world championship could be hosted in Angola.
Costa highlighted Luanda Bay's vast area, with more than 1,000 km of space suitable for world competitions, and noted its appealing view that attracts those involved in nautical sports. However, he pointed out the current lack of logistical, organizational, and infrastructural capacity to accommodate the delegations.
He also reported that a high-performance center is in the process of being implemented in Algeria, suggesting that Angola could be the next to benefit. Costa emphasized that the project by the leading institution for the sport in Africa aims to decrease the number of athletes traveling to European countries for pre-competitive training.
The African Canoeing Championships kicked off Thursday morning, with Angola securing a gold medal in the 1000-meter canoeing final (C1). Domingos Pacavira claimed victory in the race with a time of 4:48.39.
