Loroum: The women of Loroum province, through their provincial and municipal coordination, organized a day of action against malnutrition in Titao, aimed at combating the recurrence of low birth weight in children.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event, held in collaboration with the NGO The Hunger Project and the Loroum Advocacy Group, sought to draw the attention of local authorities, projects and programs, and community leaders to the pressing issue of child malnutrition. The women initiated this advocacy day with a grassroots run, engaging defense and security forces, administrative authorities, and traditional and religious leaders, led by High Commissioner Djibril Bassol©, to call for the mobilization of humanitarian partners and local communities around nutrition.
The day featured an array of activities, including an exhibition of local dishes, traditional music and dance performances, a maracana match between two women's teams, and theater performances focused on nutrition. Women's spokesperson Ramata Zango expressed gratitude for the event, emphasizing the high rates of malnutrition in Loroum and the need for partners to address the issue directly.
Community leader Harouna Bona highlighted the event's role in promoting peace and social cohesion, noting the enjoyment and laughter shared by the participants, which he believes will inspire mobilization efforts to support women's nutritional goals. Aminata Porgo, the provincial women's coordinator, celebrated the day's success in bringing joy and fostering unity among women, who have faced challenging circumstances over the past three years, preventing the organization of International Women's Day.
Porgo underscored the impact of food scarcity and poverty on pregnant women's nutrition, which contributes to the province's recurring issue of low birth weight babies. She reported that from January to December 2024, Loroum recorded 248 low birth weight children out of 1,945 live births, marking a rate of 12.75%.
High Commissioner Djibril Bassol© expressed gratitude to those supporting women's resilience and urged stakeholders to prioritize the fight against child malnutrition, encouraging communities to be more actively involved in addressing the issue.
