BUENOS AIRES – Lionel Messi, the renowned striker for the Argentina national football team, has left open the possibility of participating in the 2026 World Cup, despite earlier indications of his non-participation. This update was reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano on his X page.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Messi had previously announced in June 2023 that he did not plan to compete in the next World Cup. However, Messi’s recent statements suggest he is reconsidering, based on his physical condition at the time. “It will depend on my physical condition,” Messi stated. He acknowledged the challenge of aging, noting, “Time flies, but there is still some time left, and I don’t know how things will be then. Age is also a reality, even if it’s just a number.” Messi reflected on the differences in his current gameplay in the U.S. compared to his rigorous schedule in Europe, emphasizing that his decision would ultimately depend on how well he feels he can perform alongside his teammates.
Messi, aged 36, has had an illustrious career, playing for FC Barcelona from 2003 to 2021, where he achieved numerous accolades, including ten Spanish league titles and four Champions League victories. After a stint with Paris Saint-Germain, he now plays for Inter Miami in the United States. In 2023, he was awarded the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time.
The 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
