Murang'a: Elected leaders in Murang'a have been urged to implement programs aimed at empowering young people to combat the rising menace of drug abuse and alcoholism. Dr. Kamau Wairuri, a local professional and philanthropist, criticized some leaders for focusing on the 2027 elections instead of establishing initiatives to support jobless youths. According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Wairuri highlighted the issue while speaking at General Kago stadium in Kangema. He noted that many unemployed young people, due to distress and lack of hope, have resorted to substance abuse. Wairuri emphasized the need for leaders to provide alternative activities, such as sports and creative arts, to help youths earn a living and avoid drugs. "There is time for politics, but at this time, our leaders should focus on development and policies that will make the cost of living bearable to the majority of mwananchi," Wairuri stated. He pointed out that despite the potential in various fields, many youths are trapped in alcoholism and drugs, necessitating guidance and support. Wairuri's comments came during the finals of the Kangema Soccer Tournament, sponsored by his foundation. The tournament, which included eight teams, showcased local talent, underscoring the need for exposure to help players gain experience and confidence. Community members, including James Kamori and Jane Waithera, praised Wairuri's efforts, highlighting the importance of mentorship and direct engagement with the youth. The tournament concluded with Kangema Wazee FC defeating Kangema United FC 5-4, and all participating teams received sports kits from Wairuri's foundation.
