Ouagadougou: The Association for the Promotion and Implementation of Razball (APIRAZ) launched its Razball introductory tournament in Ouagadougou on Friday at the Bassibri field in Wayalguin, located at the Newton High School grounds. This 72-hour tournament will come to a close with the final match scheduled for April 19, 2026, starting at 3:00 PM.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Razball, a sport created in Burkina Faso by Zakaria Bandaogo in 2021, incorporates several of the country's national languages into its regulations. The introduction of Razball is part of a broader initiative to promote Burkina Faso's rich linguistic diversity and establish the sport throughout the nation.
In the context of Burkina Faso asserting itself on the international stage, the creation of Razball aligns with the country's efforts toward sovereignty and the celebration of Burkinab© culture and dignity. The tournament is being held under the patronage of the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, with the Governor of the Kadiogo Region presiding, and sponsorship from the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal of Ouagadougou.
The sport of Razball is played with the feet in teams of two or three players on a field measuring 30 meters long by 15 meters wide, with a net 80 centimeters high. The objective is to pass the ball along the ground, making it difficult for the opponent to intercept. Each team is allowed a maximum of three touches before shooting.
Points, referred to as "razi," are scored when the ball crosses the opponent's razi line. Any faults result in point deductions. For instance, touching the net, known as "le Maga" in Dioula, results in a penalty of minus one point, while shooting the ball over the net, called "le Lohni" in the San language, results in a penalty of minus two points. Other terms such as Sibgr© in Moor©, Zangayar¨ in Bissa, and Yaarson add to the unique nature of this entirely Burkina Faso-created sport, which is officiated by three referees.
