Vientiane – In an effort to bolster its tourism sector, Laos has initiated a national tour guide training program in the capital city of Vientiane, aimed at addressing the current shortage of skilled tour guides and supporting the industry’s growth.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the training, which began on September 9 and will run until November 29, is designed to equip participants with the skills necessary to provide high-quality service to tourists. The program includes lessons on ethical standards, leadership, and detailed knowledge about Laos' cultural and historical attractions. Lao National Radio reported that the initiative seeks to prepare guides who not only possess the necessary practical skills but also show deep respect for Lao culture and its many sites of interest.
Dalany Phommavongsa, the Lao Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, commented on the increasing trend in tourism and its recovery post-COVID-19. “Tourism-related businesses are now more confident about the stability of the industry and are looking to expand into new markets,” he said. The focus is on promoting green tourism and enhancing local participation.
The training also emphasizes the importance of providing a standard of service that ensures visitors have positive experiences, encouraging them to revisit Laos. As part of these efforts and to further attract international visitors, the Lao government has introduced visa-free entry and extended stay durations under the Visit Laos Year 2024 campaign for tourists from selected countries.
