VIENTIANE—Preparations are in full swing for the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings scheduled to take place in Vientiane from October 8 to 11. The summits are set to draw approximately 2,000 delegates and 1,000 journalists from around the globe under the banner of "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience."

According to Namibia Press Agency, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has called upon all ethnic groups in the country to actively support Laos's role as the host and chair of ASEAN in 2024. This significant event will feature participation from heads of state and government from ASEAN member countries, dialogue partner countries, and external partner countries, alongside representatives from regional and international organizations.

In preparation for the high-profile event, significant efforts are being made to accommodate the influx of visitors and ensure smooth proceedings. The Lao Ministry of Public Security has conducted specialized training for traffic police from September 10 to 15 to bolster security measures. Concurrently, the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports announced the temporary closure of 497 schools in Vientiane to ease traffic during the summit days.

Further enhancing city logistics, the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport has declared road closures for all types of vehicles on certain roads in the capital from October 5 to 13. This is part of a broader strategy to manage the movement of dignitaries and ensure the safety of all participants.

Local residents have also expressed their pride and readiness to support the event. Pathong Thonekham, a 30-year-old resident of Vientiane, emphasized the importance of cleanliness and order in making a positive impression on visitors. This sentiment is echoed by other locals who see the summits as an opportunity to showcase Laotian culture and hospitality.
