KEETMANSHOOP — In a display of athletic prowess, both the football and netball teams from Lakeside Grape Company were declared the champions of the 21st Namibia Grape Company (NGC) sports tournament this past Saturday.
According to a new release by The Namibian Press Agency, the week-long event took place from October 21 to 28 and saw participation from nine grape companies at Aussenkehr. In addition, local government employees formed teams for the tournament, which featured 18 football teams, 16 netball teams, 14 volleyball teams, and 13 tug-of-war teams.
The Lakeside football team was awarded N.dollars 6,900, a floating trophy, and 15 gold medals for their victory. Meanwhile, the company’s netball team secured N.dollars 3,500, a floating trophy, and 10 gold medals.
In the football category, Riverside Vineyard clinched second place, taking home N.dollars 4,500 and 15 silver medals. Broadland Grapes and Fairview won N.dollars 3,700 and N.dollars 2,900 for securing third and fourth places, respectively.
In netball, Broadland achieved second place, receiving N.dollars 2,500 and 10 silver medals. Frontier A and Cape Orchard Company finished in third and fourth places, winning N.dollars 2,000 and N.dollars 1,500, respectively.
In the volleyball segment, NGC B came out on top, securing N.dollars 3,200 and 15 gold medals. Hillside Vineyard finished second with N.dollars 2,000, followed by Broadland Grapes who received N.dollars 1,600. NDC A was awarded N.dollars 1,200 for finishing fourth.
As for the tug-of-war competition, Riverside clinched first place, earning N.dollars 2,400 and 15 gold medals. Fairview took second place, with N.dollars 1,500, while NGC A and the Government team received N.dollars 1,200 and N.dollars 900 for their third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
Wilhelm Kahupi, one of the tournament organizers, emphasized that the event is part of NGC’s social responsibility to the community of grape producers. He added that the sports tournament aims to unite green scheme growers through athletic competitions.
