KWRC Takes Immediate Action After Food Poisoning Incident at Katjinakatji Combined School

Katjinakatji: The Kavango West Regional Council (KWRC) has taken swift action by procuring cooler and freezer units for the dining hall at Katjinakatji Combined School hostel, following a recent food poisoning incident that affected over 100 learners. According to Namibia Press Agency, KWRC spokesperson Matheus Hamutenya emphasized that inadequate food storage was identified as a key factor contributing to the incident. In response, the council has also initiated the drilling of a borehole to stabilize the school's water supply. "We decided it was important that, as the regional council, we act as fast as we can. The storage conditions in the dining hall were identified as a contributing factor to food being contaminated, hence the decision to procure and ensure that there are cooler units installed in the dining hall and in the kitchen," he stated. Hamutenya further explained that the council, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister, has arranged for the drilling of two boreholes at the scho ol. This initiative aims to eliminate the school's dependence on a shared community water source, which has led to repeated shortages. "There will be two boreholes drilled at the school to ensure uninterrupted water supply. Learners in the hostel do not have access to water when consumption in the community is high. This is not good for hygiene. We want to ensure that this comes to an end." The installation of the cooler and freezer units will be carried out by the council's technical team, with the issue being treated as an emergency. The drilling of the boreholes is to be completed expeditiously. Acting principal Paulus Kakondo highlighted the challenges of overcrowding in the hostel and inconsistent water supply, which have intensified operational pressures. "The school doesn't have water. We are depending on the community borehole. The village is too big to provide water to each one, so it is a challenge," Kakondo remarked, adding that a dedicated borehole will enhance the school's operation, hygiene, an d learner outcomes.
