Kwale: The Kwale County Government is introducing solar-powered street lighting projects along the beachfronts in the tourism hub of Diani municipality. The initiative is aimed at improving socio-economic activities, enhancing safety and security, and reducing crime in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Fatuma Achani emphasized the importance of this initiative in addressing concerns about poor night-time visibility and safety. She highlighted that the administration aims to ensure that roads previously engulfed in darkness leading to the beaches are now well-lit, thereby promoting a 24-hour economy and unlocking the tourism industry’s potential.
Governor Achani, along with Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo and Tourism Executive Michael Mutua, revealed that the project would eventually extend to all parts of Kwale. The Governor stressed that street lighting is crucial for enhancing urban environments by significantly improving safety and quality of life, encouraging more activity, and making streets safer for all.
The Governor stated that once completed, the lighting project would significantly reduce crime along the beachfront properties and improve safety and aesthetics. She emphasized that solar-powered streetlights would not only enhance security but also contribute to business growth, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency. The county government aims to ensure all streetlights meet the required standards.
Governor Achani also addressed concerns regarding insecurity in tourist hotspots, where theft and other crimes occur in poorly lit areas. She called for community vigilance, urging residents to protect the new public infrastructure against theft and vandalism.
Arrangements will be made to ensure the proper maintenance of the solar street lights and flood masts schemes, transforming the face of beach access roads. Inadequate street lighting has been a major public and tourist safety concern, with the Governor noting that the initiative to light up Diani resort town is part of a comprehensive development master plan for the area.
Residents have expressed gratitude towards the county government for addressing their concerns. Ali Mokaya, a representative of south coast residents, remarked that the county’s bold step towards change is appreciated by the community.
The solar-powered streetlights project is part of a broader strategy to improve security, infrastructure, promote green energy, and enhance the quality of life for Kwale residents. Governor Achani also reiterated her administration’s commitment to tackling the ‘beach boys’ menace, which has been a nuisance and a security threat to holidaymakers.
Diani Beach, a preferred holiday destination for both domestic and foreign tourists, has been voted the best destination beach in Africa for six consecutive years by the World Travel Awards, attracting a record number of holidaymakers each year.
