Kwale: All systems are set for the 61st national Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale, scheduled for Sunday, October 20, 2024. The event, which will be presided over by President William Ruto, promises to be a significant occasion with the unveiling of the newly constructed Kwale stadium. According to Kenya News Agency, preparations for this year's Mashujaa Day are complete, with senior government and military officials, including National Celebrations Steering Committee Chairman Raymond Omollo, finalizing details. Omollo, who also serves as the Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary, confirmed the readiness of the 10,000-seater stadium which will host the national event. The theme for this year's celebration is "Affordable Housing," highlighting a key pillar of the Government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. The Principal Secretary expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on various transformative projects in Kwale County, which include road expansions, upgrades to electricit y and water supplies, and affordable housing projects. He emphasized that these initiatives underscore the significance of the national ceremony dedicated to Kenya's heroes who fought for freedom from colonial rule. The celebration will feature parades and displays from various security agencies, schools, and traditional groups. A full dress rehearsal by the military, overseen by Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Muriu Kahariri, was conducted to ensure the event runs smoothly. The new stadium complex is not just a venue for the Mashujaa Day but is also equipped with a football pitch, running tracks, a basketball court, and other sports facilities. This development is expected to boost sports in Kwale County and the broader coastal region. Omollo highlighted the efforts of construction workers who ensured the project was completed on time. The Affordable Housing Programme will also be showcased during the celebrations, providing a platform to demonstrate the progress of the government's efforts in hou sing and economic stimulation. Governor Fatuma Achani of Kwale expressed excitement about hosting the event, noting the economic benefits expected from the influx of visitors. Governor Achani also took the opportunity to invite residents to the celebrations, marking the first time Kwale has hosted the national event since Kenya's independence in 1963. She discussed strategic plans to promote local arts, sports, culture, and tourism to attract more visitors to Kwale. The Governor concluded by highlighting the diverse economy of Kwale, with key sectors including agriculture, transport, fishing, mining, and tourism. She stated that the new stadium would significantly impact sports and enhance Kwale's status as a center of tourism and economic activity, noting that local beachfront hotels are already fully booked ahead of the event.
