The Kunene Region is commemorating Heritage Week under the theme ‘Heritage and Culture: A Rock Solid Foundation.’
Heritage Month is commemorated in September every year, with Heritage Day being observed on 24 September.
This year’s Namibian Heritage Week activities take place from 18 to 24 September. Heritage Week is an opportunity for Namibians to celebrate heritage, keep culture alive and to pass on inherited traditions and knowledge.
“Through the spirit of acknowledging the nation’s diverse heritage and cultural diversity, Kunene residents have been encouraged to showcase, observe, and honour their heritage, as well as participate in various events organised by the region,” Sennobia Katjiuongua, culture officer at the Kunene Region’s education directorate, said in an interview.
Katjiuongua told Nampa on Tuesday that Heritage Week serves as an opportunity for Namibians to celebrate their heritage.
“It encourages Namibians to preserve their culture and pass on inherited traditions and knowledge to future generations. Our heritage gives us pride in who we are. You can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve come from,” she emphasised.
Katjiuongua stated that as part of the week’s festivities, the Kunene Region will host a number of activities, including a basic drawing and cardboard printing competition for junior and senior primary schools on Tuesday, and a talent show for junior and secondary schools on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the region will host a choral competition for all age groups, including youth and adults.
