KOUPÉLA — The Provincial Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Council (COPROSUR) of Kourittenga held its first ordinary session of 2024 on Thursday, under the chairmanship of the High Commissioner of the Province, Aïssata Angelina Traoré. The meeting served to evaluate past initiatives and outline future actions aimed at supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities in the region.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the provincial director in charge of Kourittenga Humanitarian Action, the province had recorded a total of 41,659 IDPs as of March 31, 2023. She detailed the assistance provided over the past year, including the distribution of food, seeds, bicycles, solar lamps, and dignity kits for schoolchildren, thanks to various partners and benefactors.
The session also highlighted the vital contributions of non-governmental organizations in extending COPROSUR’s reach. The NGO Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), a key technical and financial partner, outlined its efforts from January 2024 to the present. These initiatives focus on emergency responses and sustainable development, addressing food security, water access, hygiene, sanitation, and disaster risk management.
Regional Coordinator Sébastien Moyenga of WHH emphasized the collaborative efforts required to meet the humanitarian needs in Kourittenga. He cited specific projects such as the distribution of kitchen kits, the enhancement of school food programs, the drilling of boreholes for better water access, the creation of market gardening sites, and assisting local governments in developing contingency plans.
High Commissioner Traoré expressed gratitude to all partners for their support and urged the community to participate actively in flood prevention and emergency readiness measures. The session concluded with a call to establish a working group to improve the coordination of ground activities, ensuring more effective delivery of aid and development projects.
