Kourittenga: Schoolchildren in Koup©la took part in a radio awareness program on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) organized by the Burkinab¨ National Youth Parliament for Water (PNJBE), with support from the Belgian Development Agency (ENABEL) through the Sahel Climate Thematic Portfolio (PTCS) on May 9, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this initiative is part of the Project to establish IWRM units in secondary schools (PMPOC-IWRM), aimed at strengthening the commitment of young people in preserving water resources and combating climate change effects in Koup©la, M©guet, and Ziga. The program, aired on Dauphin FM, involved students, teachers, and technical partners discussing sustainable water management.
The event introduced the multi-establishment GIRE Unit of Koup©la, outlining its mission, operations, and actions by young water ambassadors. The GIRE cell includes 40 students from 11 secondary schools in Kourittenga province. Gender equity was emphasized in the cell's composition.
Participants learned about IWRM principles, climate change impacts on water resources, and responsible behaviors to prevent wastage. Young ambassadors shared experiences from awareness sessions, reforestation days, forum theatres, and action plan workshops.
Schools like CEG of Nakalbo, Pousga, and others participated, engaging in an interactive radio game that tested their sustainable water management knowledge. Lyc©e Kourita won the game, followed by CETFP Naaba Zanr©. Participating schools received promotional items as encouragement.
Organizers noted that this initiative enhances IWRM unit visibility, promotes sustainable behavior change in schools, and encourages participatory water governance locally. PNJBE and ENABEL/PTCS continue to support young people in finding local solutions to climate challenges in Burkina Faso.
