Baku: The High Commissioner of the Kourittenga province, Moctar Ilboudo, led the Nelson Mandela International Day celebration in Koupla, emphasizing the theme of agricultural penitentiary centers' role in training prisoners and achieving food self-sufficiency. The event, held on July 18, 2026, was sponsored by His Majesty Koadin Naaba.

According to Burkina Information Agency, installation kits were distributed to beneficiaries, offering training in traditional crafts like loincloth weaving, metalwork, and woodworking to prisoners who completed their sentences, aiming to ease their transition into the workforce. Certificates of recognition were also presented to individuals and partners committed to enhancing prisoners' living conditions.

The residents' representative, SJ, acknowledged the efforts to improve conditions for prisoners but highlighted ongoing challenges, such as electricity issues, outdated water tower equipment, and a lack of vehicles for social and health services. SJ emphasized the need for vehicles to facilitate field trips, family interactions, and medical follow-ups. He called for support from NGOs and goodwill individuals to assist detainees post-training.

SJ urged judicial authorities to expand community service opportunities and called on customary and religious leaders to advocate for prisoners. He also advocated for reduced sentences and fines.

Boureima Nikiema, director of Koupla's detention and correction house, noted that Nelson Mandela Day symbolizes the humanization of prisons, aligning with Nelson Mandela's vision of respecting detainees' dignity, empowerment, and reintegration. Nikiema highlighted MACK's efforts, with support from partners Enabel and OCADES, to establish workshops in sewing, carpentry, welding, and weaving, equipping detainees with professional skills.

Looking ahead, Mr. Nikiema pointed out the challenge of utilizing the Doubguin agricultural penitentiary center to enhance agricultural production, instill a work ethic in prisoners, and provide them with useful skills. The development of this site was funded by Enabel.

High Commissioner Moctar Ilboudo encouraged detainees to seize the opportunities provided by the state and its partners, emphasizing the trust in their ability to change and rebuild their future. Wong Sougr Naaba Siguiri Douni Ya Sougri of Ndogo supported the Faso Mªbo initiative with a donation of 150,000 CFA francs.
