Koulpelogo — In a significant environmental initiative, the associations of women and young people working in the environment, in collaboration with the provincial directorate of supervision, launched a reforestation campaign in Dourtenga, north of Ouargaye, on Sunday. The campaign, spearheaded by local organizations including the League of Associations of Ouargaye and the JAD (Youth and Action for Development) movement, aims to plant approximately 13,000 plants across the province.
According to Burkina Information Agency, which reported from the site, the launch event took place at the regional botanical grove within the commune of Dourtenga. The theme for the campaign is “tree, resilience capital for endogenous development.” Participants, including local populations and the FDS (Forces of Defense and Security), planted over a hundred species such as booba costatum, Sclerocaria birrea, Parkia biglobosa, Tamanrindus indica, Khaya senegalensis, and Annacardium occidentalae.
Harouna Derra, the provincial director of the environment for Koulpelogo, highlighted the strategic importance of the selected planting sites which include schools, private plantations, sacred places, and school gardens. “These sites are secure and well-fenced, ensuring the protection and longevity of the newly planted species,” Derra noted.
The initiative is supported by the DRE-PAMERV/CNSF agreement, which facilitated the acquisition of the plants. The provincial director emphasized that special delegations have been informed about the opportunity to acquire plants for secure planting within their respective districts, aiming to foster widespread community involvement in the reforestation efforts.
