Kossi Association Champions Social Cohesion Through Sport and Games


NOUNA — On Saturday, August 3, 2024, the ‘Yelen’ cultural space association hosted a day of sports and board games in Nouna, aimed at fostering social cohesion among the community, including internally displaced persons and the local population. The event featured a variety of activities, from a morning cross-city race to musical performances and competitive board games, culminating in a shared meal that symbolized unity and solidarity.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the head of the association, the day was organized to promote a spirit of sharing and solidarity not only between the displaced and host populations but also among local security forces and residents. The event was marked by an enthusiastic participation in a cross through the city’s main artery, followed by an aerobics session and musical entertainment that brought together participants in a festive atmosphere.



The sporting events transitioned into a competitive spirit with individual board games like scrabble, ludo, and cards, as well as a team championship in pétanque. Winners of these games received cash prizes, with the first-place finishers in each category earning 15,000 FCFA, second place receiving 10,000 FCFA, and third place taking home 5,000 FCFA.



Notable winners included Ronsard Paré in scrabble, Lamine Forogo in ludo, Boureima Sissoko in the card game, and Lassina Dama in queen. The Danish Refugee Council funded the day’s activities, supporting the association’s efforts to use sport as a bridge between diverse community groups.



Organizers expressed satisfaction with the event’s success in reducing tensions and fostering a sense of community amidst the ongoing security challenges facing the area. The event not only provided entertainment and competition but also a meaningful connection among participants, reinforcing the power of sport and games in uniting people from varied backgrounds.
