Koosin: School Gardening, a Lever for a Quality, Locally Sourced Canteen in Ourouko

Ouoruko: The Ourouko school, in the Koosin province, is implementing the presidential initiative for quality education through the promotion of school gardening.

According to Burkina Information Agency, at the Ourouko school, students and teachers are involved in vegetable gardening to improve the school canteen. Cabbage plays a significant role and contributes substantially to the students' diet.

According to the school's headmaster, Narcisse Kiemde, the teachers pay particular attention to the care of the plants, notably by removing unproductive leaves to encourage better yields. 'These leaves are not wasted. They are collected and incorporated into meal preparation, thus providing additional nutrients to the food served to the students,' he explained.

Beyond its educational aspect, the school garden also fosters social cohesion. With the support of women in the community, the garden's produce is processed, notably by being boiled and then mixed with rice to create balanced meals.

This locally sourced canteen initiative aligns with the national authorities' commitment to quality education. It also allows students to be introduced to productive activities at a very young age. Thus, the Ourouko school positions itself as a model by successfully combining education, nutrition, and sustainable development.

This experience, based on the use of local resources and community involvement, could inspire other schools to adopt a similar approach.
