Koosin Province Hosts Advocacy Workshop to Combat Gender-Based Violence

Nouna: The High Commissioner of the Koosin province, Noufo Dembele, presided over a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) advocacy workshop under the theme: "16 Days of Activism 'Let's Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls'", in the presence of administrative, traditional and religious authorities and civil society.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the workshop was organized by the provincial directorate of humanitarian action and national solidarity in collaboration with the provincial coordination of women, with financial support from partners. In Koosin province, women and girls are the most exposed to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). To highlight the gravity of the issue, three key presentations were delivered during the event.

The first presentation by the prosecutor of Faso at the Nouna High Court, Armel Noumassi Sama, focused on the judicial organization in Burkina Faso. This was followed by a detailed account of the legal framework governing GBV cases. The final presentation addressed the prevalence of gender-based violence in Koosin province, revealing 493 recorded cases from 2023 to 2025. These cases encompass various forms of violence, including physical, psychological, sexual, cultural, economic, and heritage-related violence, predominantly affecting women and girls.

The provincial focal point, Marietou Valerie Yaro, emphasized that the recorded data underrepresents the actual scale of the issue. Mema Sanogo Kanazoe, spokesperson for the provincial coordination of women, stressed the need for a stronger commitment against GBV, stating that silence and inaction exacerbate the problem.

High Commissioner Noufo Dembele called upon community leaders, teachers, health workers, parents, civil society organizations, institutions, and the media to contribute actively to this cause. He stated, "This fight is not just a woman's fight, it is a fight for society, for justice and for all of humanity."
