Kongoussi-Based Women’s Association Distributes Five Tons of Rice to Displaced Women and Families

KONGOUSSI — The Song Despite Women’s Association for Development (AFD) distributed five tons of rice to internally displaced women, host families, and children under its care in Kongoussi on June 22, 2024. The initiative aimed to support those affected by ongoing crises through nutritional aid and educational programs.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event included a day of discussions and food donations, focusing on social cohesion, reproductive health, and child education during crises. The ceremony saw the participation of association coordinator Ms. Claire Guebré/Ouédraogo, the provincial women’s director representative Bruno W. Ouédraogo, and Noëlie Sawadogo, the provincial women’s coordinator for Bam.

The distributed rice was allocated with two tons for displaced association members, 2.5 tons for host families and widows, and half a ton for orphans. Ms. Guebré/Ouédraogo highlighted the association’s efforts to address the adverse effects of limited agricultural opportunities which many locals rely on. She emphasized the rice donation as a crucial support to alleviate some burdens faced by the women and children.

Clémence Sawadogo, a beneficiary from Nabeguian village, expressed gratitude for both the insightful discussions and timely rice donation. Bruno W. Ouédraogo, representing the provincial director, also acknowledged the AFD’s efforts and reassured ongoing technical support for the association.

AFD, founded in 2014, operates across 48 villages in the Bam area, focusing on women’s empowerment in agriculture among other sectors. In March 2020, Ms. Guebré was honored with the international ‘Woman of Courage’ award by the US Department of State, recognizing her leadership in challenging contexts.
