Kisumu: Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo (CC) has lauded the improved security in the area, citing renewed spirit of cooperation between the public, local leaders, and security agencies.
According to Kenya News Agency, Leparmorijo spoke during Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground, highlighting Kisumu's recent maturity and restraint during emotionally charged moments, including political gatherings, Saba Saba commemorations, and the public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's body. He praised the peaceful conclusion of the public viewing at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, which drew thousands of mourners without any security incidents.
Leparmorijo attributed the positive change to increased dialogue between leaders and youth, as well as the active involvement of community members in maintaining law and order. He commended the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party for mobilizing 350 youths who assisted in crowd control and traffic management during the viewing event.
The commissioner noted that Kisumu's peaceful conduct during recent high-profile events indicated a decline in politically motivated unrest. He thanked political leaders for engaging youths constructively, which helped avert protests during traditionally tense periods like Saba Saba Day.
However, Leparmorijo cautioned that with schools set to close for the long holiday, there might be an increase in petty crimes and insecurity. He urged parents, teachers, and local administrators to remain vigilant and guide young people during the break.
Leparmorijo assured residents that security agencies were on high alert and would continue collaborating with the public to safeguard lives and property. He emphasized that sustaining peace was a collective responsibility and praised the ongoing cooperation among all stakeholders.
The commissioner concluded by expressing confidence that the recent peace marked a turning point for Kisumu, a city once known for political tension, now emerging as a model of civic responsibility and community-driven stability.
