KIRINYAGA, Kenya – In a significant move to foster talent and combat drug abuse, the County Assembly of Kirinyaga has announced plans to allocate funds specifically for talent identification and development across all wards. The announcement was made by County speaker Muteti Murimi during a talent search event at Tebere secondary school, organized by Gathigiriri Member of County Assembly (MCA) Benson Ngahu.
According to Kenya News Agency, the assembly recognizes the value of talent as a viable source of livelihood for youths. He emphasized the importance of a positive mindset and hard work in achieving personal goals, especially for young individuals facing life challenges. Murimi also stressed the need for youths to steer clear of drugs and to seek support in times of difficulty.
Further, Murimi outlined the assembly’s commitment to creating policies that provide a supportive environment for young talents. This includes the allocation of funds for youth empowerment initiatives. These policies and funds aim to leverage talent in spreading awareness about drug abuse, a significant concern in Kirinyaga County.
Daniel Muriithi, the majority leader in the county assembly, called on youths with talents to seize the opportunities and resources offered by both national and county governments. He highlighted the link between drug abuse and mental health problems in the county, urging the youth to avoid negative peer influences.
Benson Ngahu, hosting the event, explained the choice of a talent search over common football tournaments. This approach, he noted, includes a wider range of disciplines, thereby engaging more youths. The event, which attracted over 300 participants, showcased various talents, including comedy, art, dancing, poetry, and modeling.
Additionally, Ngahu raised concerns about the impacts of gambling and betting among the youth, advocating for stricter control measures.
Nominated MCA Bosco Gichangi, representing the youth, revealed efforts to secure a Sh 30 million allocation in the county budget. This fund is intended to be distributed across all wards, focusing on talent identification and nurturing.
