Kigumo MP Advocates for Irati Dam Construction to Boost Local Water Supply

KIGUMO, KIGUMO CONSTITUENCY – Kigumo Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Munyoro has urged the government to initiate the construction of the proposed Irati dam, aimed at increasing water coverage in the constituency. This call comes as Munyoro seeks to address the water supply challenges in his constituency, particularly in areas with lower rainfall.

According to Kenya News Agency, discussions about the dam’s construction have already been initiated with the Athi Water Development Works Agency. The dam, planned for the upper parts of Kigumo, is seen as a crucial step in resolving water scarcity, especially in the lower regions of the constituency. Munyoro highlighted the irony of the situation during a meeting with residents of Kinyona ward, noting that while water for Nairobi is sourced from the Ndakaini dam, which in turn gets its water from streams originating in Kigumo, local residents face water shortages.

The Irati dam is proposed to supply water to various local areas including Muthithi, Kahariro, Kahumbu, and Ndugamano. Munyoro expressed concern that the lower parts of the constituency have long been disadvantaged, relying on boreholes and streams for water. He emphasized that the dam’s construction would bring an end to the struggles of residents who currently travel long distances for clean water.

Munyoro also mentioned that the neighbouring Maragua constituency benefits from its Maragua dam, designed to serve the lower part of that constituency. Additionally, he noted the planned implementation of the Karinga-Kinyona Irrigation scheme, which is expected to enhance horticulture farming and food production in the area.

On a related note, Munyoro discussed the stalled Mau Mau road project, indicating that elected leaders from Murang’a are advocating for its completion. The completion of this road is seen as vital for connecting counties east of the Aberdare forests with those in the Rift Valley, promising significant economic benefits. The MP pointed out that residents of Kigumo and Kangema would particularly benefit from the Mau Mau road, given the high number of kilometres it covers in these constituencies.
