Nairobi: The Digital Access Programme, led by KICTANet through the Strengthening Digital Communities (SDC) project, is making strides in closing the digital gap in Teso North Sub-County.
According to Kenya News Agency, this initiative-supported by the UK government, KICTANet, and the Busia County Government-aims to equip youth, women, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with essential digital skills for the evolving technological landscape.
A primary focus of the programme is on cybersecurity, digital safety, and mental health awareness. Participants are educated about safe online practices, responsible communication, and robust data protection measures. This training is designed to help them navigate challenges such as online gender-based violence (GBV) and to protect their mental health.
During an event in Malaba, Dennis Ngira, Chief Officer of Youths Affairs, Sports and Tourism, commended the initiative’s impact. He shared testimonials from beneficiaries who have enhanced their economic status and online security through digital skills. Ngira noted the programme as a transformative force, enabling women, business owners, and youth to navigate and utilize the digital world effectively and safely.
Meshack Tumaini, Director of Youth Development for Busia County, echoed these views, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy in today’s technologically advanced world. Tumaini stressed the necessity for everyone to be educated in digital skills to keep pace with technological changes.
Residents of Teso North have praised the initiative for its role in bridging the digital divide and promoting digital literacy. Ruth Akinyi, a resident of Malaba, highlighted the skills she acquired in identifying cyber threats and protecting her online accounts, underscoring the program’s impact on personal data protection and online security education.
With ongoing support from stakeholders, the Digital Access Programme aims to expand further, enabling more people in Busia County to leverage technology for business and daily activities.
