Nakuru: Kiamurogi settlement is undergoing a significant urban transformation, showcasing the Nakuru county government’s dedication to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban areas.
According to Kenya News Agency, the ongoing face-lift project is currently at a 96 percent completion rate and promises to significantly improve the lives of residents and commuters of the desolate informal settlement area. A key feature of the development is the extensive Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) network, comprising 950 meters of meticulously laid Cabro paving. This pedestrian-friendly infrastructure seamlessly complements the newly constructed 950-meter bitumen standard road, ensuring accessible and safe movement for all modes of transport.
The county chief officer for housing and urban development, Arch. Kamau Kuria, said the county, recognizing the importance of security and visibility, includes installing eight modern streetlights strategically placed along the pathways and roads, along with three powerful flood mast lights to illuminate larger public spaces. Thus, this enhanced lighting infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce crime rates and improve the overall safety and security of the settlement, particularly during the night.
Beyond infrastructure, the urban renewal initiative has also focused on enhancing the aesthetic appeal and fostering community pride. Local youth have been actively involved in designing and painting vibrant street furniture, adding a touch of creativity and ownership to the revitalized public spaces. This initiative not only beautifies the area but also provides an avenue for talent development and empowers the youth within the community.
The transformative project is being implemented under the second phase of the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP), a collaborative effort between the County Government of Nakuru, the World Bank, and the Agence Fran§aise de D©veloppement (AFD). This partnership underscores the commitment of various stakeholders to addressing the challenges faced by informal settlements and promoting sustainable urban development.
During today’s inspection tour aimed at assessing the progress and ensuring adherence to the highest quality standards, Arch. Kuria reiterated the county government’s unwavering commitment to uplifting informal settlements. Moreover, he emphasized that this initiative reflects their continued efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents through the development of sustainable urban infrastructure and the active participation of the community.
The Kiamurogi urban face-lift stands as a shining example of Governor Kihika’s administration’s commitment to creating more livable, safer, and sustainable urban environments within Nakuru County, aligning directly with global sustainable development goals and fostering a sense of pride and well-being among its residents.
