Kiambu Partners with KATO to Boost Tourism Through Tea and Coffee Farm Experiences

Kiambu: Kiambu has become the first county to collaborate with the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) in a strategic effort to enhance both domestic and international tourism. This pioneering partnership aims to position the county as a leading hub for tea and coffee farm tourism, marking a significant development in Kenya's tourism landscape since devolution.

According to Kenya News Agency, the collaboration involves the Tourism Directorate, led by Chief Officer Simon Kiberenge, the Chairman of the Kiambu County Tourism Board, James Ngunyi, and KATO Chief Executive Officer Fred Kaigua. Their discussions focused on leveraging Kiambu's cultural and agricultural assets to improve its appeal as a tourist destination. Kiberenge expressed confidence in the county's ability to attract more visitors with KATO's support, highlighting the potential of its farms, heritage sites, and leisure facilities.

Ngunyi noted that Kiambu is well-positioned to take advantage of its proximity to Nairobi and its rich agritourism potential. He emphasized that transforming tea and coffee farms into tourist experiences could create jobs, generate revenue, and offer visitors authentic Kenyan stories. KATO CEO Fred Kaigua praised the initiative, underscoring the importance of county governments in diversifying Kenya's tourism offerings beyond traditional wildlife safaris.

The partnership is set to enhance marketing strategies, capacity building for local tour operators, and the creation of structured tour packages that showcase Kiambu's tea estates, coffee farms, cultural sites, and natural attractions. Tourism analysts suggest that Kiambu's innovative approach may inspire other counties to establish similar partnerships with KATO, thereby distributing visitor numbers more evenly across the country and reducing dependency on coastal areas and wildlife parks.

This development aligns with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife's recent efforts to collaborate with all 47 counties to identify and promote new tourism products. Tourism CS Rebecca Miano has emphasized the significance of domestic tourism in boosting the sector's GDP contribution and fostering cultural appreciation among Kenyans. Miano reiterated the ministry's commitment to supporting county initiatives to promote tourism for both domestic and international visitors.
