KIAMBU, Kenya - Nutrition experts are raising awareness about the vital role that fruits and vegetables play in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), emphasizing the need for these food groups in daily diets.

According to Kenya News Agency, a nutritionist at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is key to reducing the risk of various NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. Dr. Cherotich pointed out that the decline in health among populations today is largely attributable to inadequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables. She emphasized that these food groups, when consumed as part of a balanced diet low in fats, sugars, and sodium, not only contribute to preventing weight gain and obesity but also offer a range of beneficial nutrients and antioxidants.

"Fruits and vegetables are crucial sources of dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and numerous non-nutrient substances that have antioxidant properties, such as plant sterols and flavonoids," Dr. Cherotich explained. She highlighted the importance of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables to ensure an adequate intake of these essential nutrients, which are necessary for building and repairing blood, tissue, and bones, and maintaining overall health and fitness.

Dr. Cherotich also advised on the importance of regular exercise for maintaining desired body fitness, blood sugar levels, and immunity. She suggested plant-based protein alternatives for individuals with allergies to animal proteins, such as substituting meat with beans or green lentils.

The issue of malnutrition and obesity has been a major concern in Kiambu County, as stated by the County Director for Health, Dr. Hillary Kago. In response, the county plans to collaborate with community health promoters to educate the public on healthy living practices.

Data from Dr. McDonald Obudho, the Director General of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, as of December 2023, indicates that over 25% of children under five years old in Kenya are affected by stunting, underweight, or thinness. To combat these issues and reduce the risk of NCDs, the World Health Organization recommends a daily intake of more than 400 grams of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet low in fat, sugars, and sodium.

"This program is set to transform the lives of children with hearing loss, and I am fully committed to its success," said Kihika during the announcement.

Cochlear implants, electronic devices that offer a sense of sound to individuals with severe hearing loss, will be available for recipients ranging from as young as 12 months to 70 years old. This initiative follows the guidelines provided by the Nairobi ENT clinic, highlighting the wide age range of potential beneficiaries.

Governor Kihika emphasized Nakuru's strategic position to not only serve its residents but also those from neighboring counties and countries, indicating the broader impact of this healthcare initiative. "With this program, Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital will become a pivotal center for hearing restoration services in the region," Kihika added.

Jennifer Jordan McCall, President of the Baker Institute and founder of the Hear Kenya Project, confirmed that a team is prepared to commence the cochlear implant program at NTRH. This program will be among the specialized services offered at the hospital, aiming to significantly improve the quality of life for children and adults with hearing impairments.

NAKURU, Kenya - Nakuru County Government is currently drafting a bill aimed at safeguarding both human and animal populations from the consumption of foodstuffs and animal feeds tainted with hazardous substances, antibiotic residues, and disease vectors.

According to Kenya News Agency, the County Public Health Chief Officer, the initiative involves the creation of the 'Nakuru County Food Safety Policy' and the 'Nakuru County Food and Feed Safety Quality Control Coordination Bill 2022.' These measures are designed to enforce strict regulations to prevent unsafe food products from entering the market. The primary goal of these legislative actions is to protect consumers from foodborne illnesses and injuries associated with food consumption. Ms. Abuku emphasized the importance of this policy and bill during a workshop that convened various stakeholders at the county headquarters to discuss the proposed changes.

The need for such a bill has been underscored by the alarming rise in cancer cases, which experts believe may be linked to chemical and organic contaminants in food products. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the significant burden of foodborne diseases in Africa, noting their comparable impact to diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis, particularly among young children. The organization also pointed out the substantial health cost implications and the threat to productivity posed by these diseases.

The proposed bill mandates comprehensive scrutiny of suppliers of critical food items like milk, meat, vegetables, and fruits to ensure the safety of their products. Additionally, it will enforce strict adherence to feed safety standards among animal feed manufacturers. The overarching aim is to guarantee that food is safely produced, distributed, processed, marketed, and prepared for human consumption right from the farm.

Key aspects of the bill include the coordination of competent authorities, the establishment of multi-annual control plans, verification mechanisms for enforcing food and feed safety requirements, and audits of food and feed safety mechanisms. The drafting of the bill was a collaborative effort involving the Micro-Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MESPT) and the County government, with participation from various departments and organizations.

Ms. Abuku noted the collective responsibility in addressing food safety, emphasizing the role of an informed and empowered consumer base in enforcing market discipline and promoting competition based on product quality. Additionally, Mr. Newton Mwaura, the Chief Officer for Agriculture, highlighted the administration's efforts in promoting Good Agricultural Practices among farmers, aiming to access more lucrative markets through investment in food safety practices.

The proposed legislation also addresses public-private partnerships as a means to enhance food safety, suggesting that such collaborations could facilitate the development of a robust food safety system. The bill includes provisions for traceability, reference laboratories for official control, and the appointment of compliance officers to ensure compliance with food safety standards.

Experts at the forum pointed out the alarming trend of antibiotic resistance, attributed to the presence of antibiotic traces in milk and meat products. WHO estimates reveal the global scale of food contamination issues, with 1 in 10 people worldwide falling ill after eating contaminated food, resulting in approximately 420,000 deaths annually.
