Kiambu Inducts 319 Interns Under Affordable Housing Programme

Kiambu: The government on Tuesday inducted and trained 319 interns under the Affordable Housing Programme at Kiambu National Polytechnic in Kiambu County. The interns will be deployed to affordable housing projects across the county to support construction, supervision, and project delivery as Kiambu continues to experience rapid urban growth and rising housing needs.

According to Kenya News Agency, the one-year internship programme, expected to officially commence in January 2026, is part of the government's efforts to address the growing demand for decent and affordable housing, which is a key pillar of national development and urban planning. The Deputy County Commissioner for Kiambu Sub-County, Mr. Titus Macharia, who spoke during the official opening of the training, said the programme is designed to equip young professionals with practical skills while strengthening accountability in public service.

Mr. Macharia emphasized the programme's aim to prepare interns to serve the public with integrity, professionalism, and commitment. County Director of Housing Mr. Michael Kiarie highlighted that safety at construction sites will remain a priority as interns are deployed to various project locations. He noted that the internship programme offers young professionals hands-on experience that will strengthen their skills and enhance their employability, while stressing the importance of observing site safety measures and following instructions from supervisors.

Housing officer Mr. Silvester Muruthi stated that the interns will mainly play a supporting role in ongoing affordable housing projects. He mentioned that interns will be attached to housing projects within or near their areas of residence to improve efficiency and ease of supervision. One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Mercy Kioko, expressed optimism that the programme will offer her a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience while contributing to development initiatives in the county.

The Affordable Housing Internship Programme is part of the government's broader agenda to empower youth while expanding access to decent and affordable housing.
