Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi Launches Annual Kiambu Champions Cup Football Tournament

Kiambu, Kenya – Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has officially launched the Kiambu Champions Cup Football Tournament, marking the culmination of a month-long county-wide team registration process that concluded in September 2023.

According to a news release by the Kenya News Agency, the primary objective of this tournament is to create additional job opportunities through sports and bolster the sports sector in the region. Over 600 teams from all 60 wards in Kiambu County have registered for the tournament.

“We are glad to announce that we have so far registered over 600 teams from all the 60 wards in Kiambu County, and all of them are represented here today,” stated Governor Wamatangi.

He emphasized that the program aligns with his vision to promote the development of the sports industry, enhance employment prospects within the sports sector, and provide young individuals with a viable pathway to careers in football.

To ensure the tournament’s success and long-term viability for sports development, Wamatangi’s administration is investing in the refurbishment of several stadiums and playing fields throughout Kiambu County.

The Governor also announced the prize structure for the Kiambu Champions Cup Football Tournament, with the winning team set to receive Sh 500,000, the second-place team receiving Sh 250,000, the third-place team receiving Sh 100,000, and the fourth-place team receiving Sh 50,000.

Osman Korar, the County Executive Committee Member for Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication, who was present at the launch event, encouraged all participating teams to demonstrate hard work and determination throughout the tournament to ensure excellent performance.

“I encourage all the participants to take this seriously, for it is a great platform for football enthusiasts to showcase their talents, which may open doors to better opportunities at the national and even international levels,” stated Osman.
