Kiambu County Passes Sh23.5 Billion Budget, Prioritizing Health and Education

KIAMBUI COUNTY – In a decisive move amid national financial uncertainty, Kiambu County has successfully passed its Appropriation Bill for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, set to commence on July 1st. This budget aims to tackle socio-economic issues within the county, with substantial allocations directed towards health and education.

According to Kenya New Agency, the budget, totaling Sh23.5 billion, was drafted following extensive public participation across all 12 sub-counties. This collaborative process ensured that the budget reflects the needs and priorities of Kiambu’s residents. The governor expressed his optimism about the positive impact this budget will have, particularly in addressing the deficits in the local health sector, which is currently reliant on private facilities for over two-thirds of its services.

The Health Department will receive the largest portion of the budget, approximately Sh7.7 billion. This funding is designated for significant enhancements in healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of new hospitals, procurement of essential drugs and medical equipment, and the implementation of the ‘Wamatangi Care’ Universal Health Coverage program.

In education, the budget allocates Sh2.3 billion for the modernization of 134 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers. This investment will cover the construction of classrooms for different preschool levels, staff offices, sanitation facilities, and play areas. Additionally, the education sector will benefit from Governor Wamatangi’s feeding program aimed at providing nutritious meals to schoolchildren, along with bursaries for needy students and funding for vocational training centers.

The Roads and Transport Department has been allocated Sh2.4 billion to improve infrastructure such as access roads and bus parks, and expand the existing road network. Other significant allocations include Sh1.2 billion for the Agriculture sector and Sh1.1 billion for Water services.

Governor Wamatangi praised the seamless collaboration between the County Assembly and the Executive, which facilitated a smooth budgetary process. He also highlighted the passage of the Kiambu County Persons with Disabilities Bill 2024, reflecting the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and support for vulnerable groups.
